What's Your Brand's Archetype?
Before people can trust your brand, they need to recognise it. Archetypes are how that happens.
An archetype isn’t a stereotype. It’s a foundational character pattern. The Hero. The Creator. The Sage. The Outlaw. These patterns are as old as storytelling itself, and they’re also one of the fastest ways to shape how your brand shows up in the world.
In branding, your archetype gives you a consistent identity across every touchpoint, so your brand feels coherent whether someone meets you through an ad, a sales call, or your packaging. More importantly, it’s how people recognise you: quickly, emotionally, and intuitively, before they’ve consciously worked out why they like you.
A compass, not a cage
Your archetype isn’t a rigid box. It’s a starting point. It gives you a compass for the decisions that shape a brand: tone of voice, visual style, even your customer experience design. When you’re not sure if something “feels right” for the brand, your archetype is usually the fastest way to find out.
One caveat: a brand can only have one dominant archetype. If your quiz result comes back split between two or more, that’s not a dead end. It’s a signal that there’s more identity consolidation work to do before your brand can show up as clearly and consistently as it could.
Archetypes are shortcuts: for you and for your customers. They help you build consistency across every touchpoint, and they help the people you’re trying to reach trust and connect with your brand faster. Get it right, and you stop having to explain who you are. People just know.
